A Dose of Optimism from Gavin Newsom

Today he’s California’s Lt. Governor, but Gavin Newsom has the energy and enthusiasm of someone with far higher ambitions.

Newsom recently shared some of his fresh ideas — and a dose of optimism — during his recent visit to UC San Diego’s Revelle Forum, where he sat down for an interview with Political Science Professor Thad Kousser to discuss his new book, Citizenville: Reconnecting People and Government in the Digital Age.

During the lively interview, now available to UCTV viewers online and on-air, Newsom cites examples of individuals around the country who are bridging the vast chasm between government and the technologies that are already revolutionizing other parts of our daily lives. He contends that the best way for Americans to secure their future is to reinvent their relationship with their government, as they have countless times before, and have the power to do so again.

Watch “Citizenville” with Gavin Newsom — Revelle Forum and browse through the Revelle Forum video archive for more stimulating conversations with guests such as TC Boyle, Salman Rushdie, Frank Bruni and more.

Fresh Content for a Fresh Year – January 2013 Highlights

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH ALL THAT STUFF?

Americans sure do like their stuff. The problem is, it piles up, leaving families surrounded by overstuffed cabinets and plenty of clutter. The new UCTV Prime series “A Cluttered Life: Middle Class Abundance” follows a team of UCLA anthropologists as they venture into the stuffed-to-capacity homes of dual income, middle class American families in order to truly understand the food, toys, and clutter that fill them. The three-part series premieres January 11 but you can watch the trailer now.

MUSEUM MEETS ORCHESTRA

The latter half of 2012 brought some unusual sights and sounds to UCLA’s Hammer Museum. That’s when the 24-member, experimental classical/contemporary orchestra wild Up took part in a six-month residency made up of three major concerts and 30 smaller chamber music performances that defied convention and transformed the museum into a space as unexpected and moving as the music itself. Museum Meets Orchestra, a four-part series premiering January 8 on UCTV Prime, takes you behind-the-scenes of this unusual residency.

Yoshimi’s Robot Battle Bridges Science and Art

A groundbreaking science fiction musical is wowing audiences at the UC San Diego-based La Jolla Playhouse. Directed by Des McAnuff, the Tony Award-winning director of Broadway musicals “Jersey Boys” and “The Who’s Tommy,” “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” is a magical tale of love and the struggle for survival set to the music of The Flaming Lips and featuring a 14-foot robot puppet, dancers in “glowing” LED costumes and stunning projections

But beyond the cutting-edge stagecraft, “Yoshimi” is a testament to the intertwined and largely unexplored relationship between science and art. At a recent standing room only event, leading San Diego medical researchers and La Jolla Playhouse artists, including McAnuff and Artistic Director Christopher Ashley, got together for a frank and fascinating discussion about the creative ground they share — and now you can watch it on UCTV.

Moderated by Daniel Einhorn, medical director of Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute, the panel also includes Gerald Joyce, professor in the departments of chemistry and molecular biology at The Scripps Research Institute, Thomas Albright, director of the Vision Center laboratory at Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and Pamela Itkin-Ansari, adjunct assistant professor at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute.

Silent Spring’s Legacy: Alternatives to Insecticides

To mark the 50th anniversary of “Silent Spring,” Rachel Carson’s landmark book that helped launch the environmental movement, the San Diego-based Center for Ethics in Science and Technology is kicking off a new lecture series highlighting the legacy and progress Carson’s work helped create.

In the first talk in the series, Stephen Welter of San Diego State University focuses on biologically-based alternatives to insecticide use in American agriculture that also consider non-target environmental effects, worker safety issues, and consumer needs as well as the more traditional models of economic trade-offs.

Watch “Alternatives to Insecticides: High Impact Solutions Without Environmental Trade-offs” and check out all the videos in the “Exploring Ethics” series.
